EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the sad reality of rhinoceros hunting in Bahr-el-Ghazal, South Sudan, Africa during the early 20th century. The photograph, estimated to have been taken around 1909, depicts the aftermath of a successful hunt, with the lifeless bodies of two rhinoceros lying next to their killers and their huts in the background. The rhinos, with their massive size and armor-like skin, were considered big game prizes among European hunters during this era. The hunt was seen as a sign of wealth and status, and the hides and horns were highly valued for their commercial worth. However, the cruelty and sporting aspect of this hunt cannot be ignored. The rhinos were hunted for sport, often with little regard for their suffering. The use of guns and other weapons made the hunt easier, but also made it more brutal. The rhinos were often tracked for days, and when they were finally cornered, they were shot multiple times, sometimes at point-blank range. The animals would often be left to die slowly and painfully, their bodies sometimes used as trophies or left to rot. This image serves as a stark reminder of the past, and the consequences of human actions on the natural world. The rhinoceros population in Africa has been decimated by poaching and habitat loss, and today, both black and white rhinoceros are critically endangered. It is important that we learn from the past and work towards a future where wildlife is respected and protected, rather than hunted for sport or commercial gain.
