EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of the Chaouia uprising in Morocco during 1907. The rebellion, led by local Berber and Arab tribes, was a response to the increasing French colonial presence and the exploitation of natural resources in the region. In this photograph, a locomotive lies destroyed, its once powerful steam engine now a mere shell of its former self. The boiler has been blown up, and the wheels, now dislodged, lie scattered around the wreckage. The rebels, determined to disrupt the French railway system, successfully derailed this train, marking a significant victory in their resistance. The date of this photograph is 1907, a pivotal year in Moroccan history, as the French continued their efforts to expand their colonial empire in Africa. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of Morocco and its people during the early 1900s.
