EDITORS COMMENTS
The Grand Pump Room Hotel, Stall Street, Bath: A Glimpse into the Past This photograph offers a glimpse into Bath's rich history, showcasing the Grand Pump Room Hotel on Stall Street, which opened its doors in 1869. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Wilson and Wilcox, the Grand Pump Room Hotel was a grand addition to the city's architectural landscape. Its ponderous late Georgian style, with side wings topped by Frenchified pavilion roofs, perfectly complemented the surrounding historic buildings. The hotel's imposing presence closed the vista west along Abbey Churchyard from the Abbey's west front, past the Pump Room, and through the north Colonnade. The photograph, estimated to have been taken around 1908, captures the hotel's elegance and sophistication, making it a must-see attraction for visitors to Bath. Unfortunately, the Grand Pump Room Hotel did not withstand the test of time. It was demolished in 1959, making way for pallid Neo-Georgian work that failed to capture the grandeur and historical significance of its predecessor. Today, this photograph serves as a reminder of Bath's architectural heritage and the beauty of its past. The architectural firm of Wilson and Wilcox, based in Somerset, was known for its innovative designs and contributions to the built environment of Bath and beyond during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their work on the Grand Pump Room Hotel is a testament to their skill and vision, leaving a lasting impact on the city's architectural landscape.
