EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken in 1934, the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and the Queen Mother, are seen enjoying a lively performance by a group of Austrian folk dancers during a tea reception at Dorland House in London. The Duke, dressed in a smart suit and bow tie, and the Duchess, elegantly attired in a floral dress and hat, are engrossed in the vibrant display of traditional Austrian dance. The occasion was an exhibition of Austrian Art and Industry, and the Duke and Duchess were graciously hosting the event in the presence of Baron Franckenstein, the eldest son of Karl Baron von und zu Franckenstein and his wife, Elma nee Countess von Schonborn-Wiesentheid. The Baron, who would later be knighted as Sir George Franckenstein, was a distinguished member of the Franckenstein family. The 1930s were an era of cultural exchange and diplomacy, and this gathering at Dorland House was an excellent example of the rich and diverse artistic offerings from around the world that were showcased in London during this time. The Austrian folk dancers, with their colorful costumes and energetic movements, added a touch of exoticism and excitement to the event, leaving a lasting impression on the Duke and Duchess. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the social and cultural landscape of the 1930s and the connections between Britain and Austria during this period. The Duke and Duchess's warm reception of the Austrian folk dancers is a testament to their appreciation for the arts and their role as ambassadors of goodwill and understanding between nations.
