The icing department worked continuously for three weeks on the cake which was originally designed to weigh 400lb! In the end Buckingham Palace requested a reduced austerity cake of only 195lb... The cake was created/decorated by Jack Bryant (Head confectioner) with the help of his father William Bryant. Date: 1947

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite photograph captures a significant moment in the history of the British Monarchy: the presentation of the Sceptre to Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, during her coronation in 1953. However, let us take a moment to reflect on an equally impressive event that took place eight years prior - the creation of her wedding cake by the renowned bakery, Huntley & Palmers, of Reading, Berkshire. The icing department at Huntley & Palmers worked tirelessly for three weeks to produce a magnificent cake for the young princess on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947. The original design called for a grand cake weighing an impressive 400lb. However, due to post-war austerity measures, Buckingham Palace requested a more modest cake, resulting in a final weight of 195lb. The cake was expertly crafted and decorated by Jack Bryant, the head confectioner, with the assistance of his father, William Bryant. The intricate design featured 17 separate tiers, each adorned with delicate sugar flowers and intricate icing work. The cake was a true labor of love, reflecting the excitement and anticipation surrounding the royal wedding. Despite the austerity measures, the cake remained a symbol of hope and celebration during a time of hardship. The wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip marked the beginning of a new era for the British Monarchy, and the creation of their wedding cake by Huntley & Palmers served as a testament to the enduring spirit of the British people.
