Alexandra, 2nd Duchess of Fife and her sister Princess Maud

Alexandra, 2nd Duchess of Fife, later Princess Arthur of Connaught (1891-1959) standing left, and, seated, Princess Maud (1893-1945). The daughters are in mourning for the Duke of Fife who died of pleurisy at Aswan on 29th January 1912. The Fifes were sailing to Egypt in December 1911 when their ship, the P&O liner, Delhi, hit a sandbank off Cape Trafalgar. The Fifes were among the last to leave the ship, and the ships boat on which they were taken was swamped several times by waves; Princess Alexandra was washed over but a young engineer clung to her hand. Maud was also washed over closer to shore, and once all the passengers had struggled to the beach they had a five-mile walk to find shelter. After the trauma of such an event, the Duke developed a cough and fever which eventually led to his death. Date: 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Alexandra, 2nd Duchess of Fife (left), and her younger sister Princess Maud are captured in mourning attire, paying tribute to their beloved father, the Duke of Fife, who tragically passed away due to complications from an illness contracted during a shipwreck in January 1912. The sisters, who were sailing to Egypt aboard the P&O liner, Delhi, were among the last to leave the stricken vessel after it hit a sandbank off Cape Trafalgar. The harrowing experience left them shaken, with both princesses being washed overboard during the evacuation. Once safely on shore, they faced a grueling five-mile trek to find shelter. Despite the traumatic events, the Duke's health began to deteriorate, and he developed a cough and fever. Ultimately, these conditions led to his death just a few weeks later in Aswan on 29th January 1912. In this image, the Duchess of Fife stands somberly, her expression reflecting the profound sadness that enveloped her and her sister. Princess Maud, seated, gazes off into the distance with a pensive look, her black mourning gown and veil adding to the solemn atmosphere. The sisters' elegant, high-necked dresses and intricate headpieces, typical of the early 1910s, serve as a stark contrast to the grim circumstances that surround them. This poignant photograph captures the sisters' grief and resilience in the face of tragedy, offering a glimpse into the personal lives of the British royal family during a time of loss.
