EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 19th century print captures the image of a young woman from Bujaruelo, a remote village nestled in the Spanish Pyrenees region of Aragon. The woman is depicted wearing traditional attire that reflects the unique cultural heritage of this mountainous area. Her long, dark hair is covered by a white kerchief, which is tied with ribbons and cascades down her back. Her hair braids are also adorned with ribbons, adding an elegant touch to her simple yet beautiful outfit. Underneath her kerchief, she wears a red fichu, a long fabric that is wrapped around her neck and chest, and a laced corset that cinches her waist, accentuating her figure. She is also wearing a petticoat and a pleated apron, both made of heavy, textured fabric that would have provided warmth in the cold Pyrenean climate. This image is a handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante, which was originally published in the French book 'Costumes of Various Countries' in 1827. The intricate details of the woman's clothing and the rich colours used in the print offer a glimpse into the fashion and lifestyle of rural communities in the Spanish Pyrenees during the 19th century.
