EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Yellow or Pale Tussock Moth, Calliteara pudibunda, in its adult form perched on a branch of a plum tree (Prunus domestica). The intricate details of the moth's vibrant yellow and black wings, as well as its long, feathery antennae, are beautifully rendered in this 18th-century illustration. The Yellow or Pale Tussock Moth is a native of Europe and Asia, and its larvae, or caterpillars, are known for their distinctive appearance with tufts of setae, or hairs, that resemble tussocks of wool. The moth's metamorphosis from caterpillar to adult involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and imago. This engraving is taken from the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects), published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. The original edition contained 25 plates, and for this second edition, M. Houttuyn added an additional eight plates to the collection. Jacob L. Admiral was the artist responsible for drawing and etching the illustrations, showcasing his exceptional skill in capturing the natural world with remarkable detail and accuracy. The hand-coloring of the plates adds an extra layer of beauty and realism to the already impressive engravings.
