EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, created by R.V. after an illustration by Francois Courboin, transports us back to Paris in 1824, where women of the fashionable society gathered inside the Boulogne Panorama located on Boulevard Montmartre. The Panorama, an innovative form of entertainment during the Bourbon Restoration, showcased large cityscapes and battle scenes, created by Robert Fulton. In this image, we see a group of women, their elegant silhouettes framed against the backdrop of the Boulogne panorama. The women, dressed in the height of 19th-century fashion, don bonnets adorned with delicate feathers, lace collars, bibs, puff sleeves, and full skirts. One woman holds a parasol, shielding herself from the imaginary sun. Their dresses, with aprons and shawls, reveal an air of refinement and elegance. The women's attire reflects the esthetics of the time, with a focus on femininity and opulence. The intricate details of their clothing, from the bell-shaped skirts to the delicate lacework, speak to the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterized French society during this period. As they gaze at the panorama, these women, known as "Madame Marie" and other unidentified ladies, embody the spirit of Parisian high society. Their fascination with the new form of entertainment, the Panorama, serves as a testament to the city's vibrant cultural scene and its ability to captivate and inspire its inhabitants.
