EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving depicts the Wild Mignonette, Reseda lutea, a plant of great botanical and historical significance. The intricately detailed illustration, created using the techniques of stipple and copperplate engraving, was produced in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration showcases the Wild Mignonette in its natural habitat, surrounded by various planktonic organisms, including crustaceans such as Daphnia magna, Limnadia hermanni, and fairy shrimp like Branchinecta paludosa, Branchipus paludosus, and Dhermannia brachipus. The Wild Mignonette, also known as Rue des Pres or Wild Rue, is a herbaceous plant that belongs to the Resedaceae family. It is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. The plant's edible fruits, which resemble small, round, brown nuts, have a pungent, bitter taste and have been used in traditional medicine and as a vegetable in various culinary applications. This illustration is taken from the "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences), a comprehensive work on natural history published in Italy during the 19th century. The text accompanying this illustration was written by renowned botanists Antoine Laurent de Jussieu and Gabriel Alphonse Jean Baptiste Claverie Pretre. The work was illustrated by Pierre Jean Francois Turpin, a skilled engraver and illustrator of the time. The Wild Mignonette holds historical significance as it was once believed to have medicinal properties, particularly in the treatment of snake bites and rheumatism. Its use as a vegetable and in traditional medicine highlights the rich biodiversity of the natural world and the importance of documenting and understanding the various plants and organisms that surround us.
