EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph showcases two remarkable species of the Australian fauna: the Western Glider (Cymothoe althea) and the Gaudy Commodore Butterfly (Precis octavia, Vanessa amestris). The Western Glider, depicted on the left side of the image, is a nocturnal marsupial glider, native to the southwestern parts of Australia. With its wings folded, it resembles a flat, brown leaf, providing excellent camouflage against the forest floor. The under side of its body, shown on the right side of the image, is covered in white fur, which helps to insulate the animal and keep it warm. The Gaudy Commodore Butterfly, displayed on the right side of the image, is a vibrant and eye-catching insect. Its upper side is adorned with a striking pattern of black, orange, and white, while the underside, shown on the left side, is a more subdued brown and white. This butterfly is native to Central and South America, but was introduced to Australia in the late 1800s and has since become an invasive species. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph is from the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837. The work was produced by the renowned English naturalist and entomologist, John O. Westwood. The handcolouring adds an extra layer of beauty and realism to the already impressive illustrations, making this a valuable and captivating piece of natural history.
