EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Andrea Bernieri from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy in 1843, depicts the grand wedding celebration of King Massinissa of Numidia and Sophonisba of Carthage. The fragment of the original painting from which this illustration was derived was discovered in Pompeii, providing a tantalizing glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of ancient North African royal weddings. Massinissa, a powerful Numidian king, is depicted in regal attire, wearing a flowing tunic and a gold diadem adorned with precious gems. His bride, Sophonisba, is shown in elegant Carthaginian dress, her long, flowing robes draped over a richly decorated chair. Surrounding the couple are an array of guests, some engaged in lively conversation, others partaking in the sumptuous banquet spread before them. The wedding of Massinissa and Sophonisba was a significant political alliance, as Numidia and Carthage were longtime rivals. The union marked the beginning of a new era of peace and cooperation between the two powerful North African civilizations. This illustration offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history and culture of ancient Numidia and Carthage, as well as the grandeur and splendor of ancient wedding celebrations.
