EDITORS COMMENTS

This image depicts a Water-carriage, or Wassermaschine, making its way through a festive procession in honor of the birth of Freiderich, Duke of Wurttemberg. The ornate water-carriage is adorned with musicians in colorful fishscale costumes, playing various instruments and adding to the lively atmosphere. Hanging by one leg from the side of the carriage is a figure of Cupid, the Roman god of love, fast asleep. Two winged women in heraldic colors follow behind, their outstretched wings creating a regal and otherworldly presence. The scene is further enhanced by the sign "Dormiens Anima Cupidini," which translates to "Sleeping Soul of Cupid," adding to the romantic and dreamlike quality of the procession. This beautiful hand-colored copperplate engraving is taken from Esaias von Hulsen's "Delineation und Abbildung aller furstlichen Aufzug und Ritterspielen" (Description and Representation of All Princely Processions and Tournaments), published in 1617, and later reprinted in Robert von Spalarts "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" in 1810.
