EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Wall Butterfly, Lasiommata megera, Larva and Pupa on Cornflower, Centaurea cyanus," was created by the skilled Dutch artist Jacob L. Admiral for the second edition of "Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects," published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. The work was overseen by the renowned naturalist M. Houttuyn, who added eight new plates to the original 25. The captivating image showcases the various stages of the Wall Butterfly's life cycle as they interact with the beautiful Cornflower, Centaurea cyanus. The Wall Butterfly, also known as the Tortoiseshell Butterfly, is depicted in its larval and pupal stages on the cornflower, while the adult butterfly is shown gracefully perched on the flower's petals. The intricate engraving highlights the delicate details of both the insects and the flower, making for a stunning visual representation of the natural world. Jacob L. Admiral's masterful artwork provides an accurate and intriguing portrayal of the Wall Butterfly's metamorphosis, showcasing the transformation from caterpillar to pupa and finally to the adult butterfly. The Cornflower, a beloved and iconic wildflower, serves as the perfect backdrop for this display of nature's beauty and intricacy. This engraving is a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 18th century, offering a glimpse into the natural world and the fascination with the metamorphosis of insects.
