EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 17th century print depicts a breathtaking view of Clarendon House from St. James Street, as captured in a rare engraving from the esteemed collection of Thomas Allen. The classical mansion, built by Roger Platt for Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, in 1664, stands proudly against the backdrop of London's historic skyline. Tragically, the magnificent building was demolished in 1683, leaving only memories and this precious record of its former glory. The engraving, produced by the skilled hand of John Thomas Smith, was based on original drawings by members of the Society of Antiquaries. Smith's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the building's architectural features, from the grand columns and ornate windows to the intricate carvings adorning its facade. Clarendon House was located near St. Helen's Bishopsgate Church, and the print offers a glimpse into the bustling street life of the time, with figures of Thos. Bancroft, Lord Mayor, and other officers going about their duties. The print also features a view of the church and the nearby tombs and gravestones, adding to the sense of history and tradition that pervades the image. This copperplate engraving, published by J. Sewell, R. Folder, and J. Simco in London in 1798, is an invaluable historical record of a lost monument of London's rich architectural heritage. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when Clarendon House stood as a symbol of power, prosperity, and beauty in the heart of the city.
