EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, entitled "Cassiopea frondosa 1, Melicertum species 2, and Obelia polyp 3. Cassiopea frondosissima, Melicerta perla, Obelia sferulina," is a captivating illustration of three distinct marine organisms: upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea frondosa; Melicertum species, a type of feather star or crinoid; and Obelia polyp, a type of obelisk hydroid. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea frondosa, is depicted in its characteristic position, hanging upside-down from the seafloor with its bell-shaped body open to the water above. The Melicertum species, with its elegant arms adorned with tiny, star-shaped structures, is shown in its natural habitat, clinging to the seafloor. The Obelia polyp, on the other hand, is illustrated in its complex form, with its tall, slender stalk and intricate, branching structures. The illustration was produced using the stipple engraving technique, which involves creating an image by applying tiny dots of ink to a copper plate. The meticulous process required the collaboration of several skilled artisans, including the illustrator Jean Gabriel Pretre, the engraver Corsi, and the director Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional talent and attention to detail. This exquisite illustration offers a glimpse into the rich marine biodiversity of the past and serves as a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the time. The upside-down jellyfish, Melicertum species, and Obelia polyp, though seemingly disparate, are united in this beautiful work of art, showcasing the intricacies and complexities of the natural world.
