EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Tolumnia guttata orchid, also known as Epidendrum guttatum, Cymbidium guttatum, or Epidendro macchiato. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The meticulous engraving was executed by Giarre, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his exceptional attention to detail and ability to capture the intricacies of various plant species. The Tolumnia guttata orchid is depicted in all its elegance, with its vibrant, white and red flowers adorned with distinctive black spots. The Tolumnia guttata, or Heliocereus guttatus, is a species of epiphytic orchid that is native to Central and South America. It is also known by various other names, including Phyllanthus guttatus, Nopalxochitl, and the German Emperor Orchid. The orchid's common name, 'guttata,' refers to the black spots on its flowers. This exquisite engraving not only showcases the beauty of the Tolumnia guttata orchid but also offers a glimpse into the rich history of botanical illustration during the 19th century. The intricate details captured in the engraving reflect the dedication and passion of Turpin and his team in documenting the natural world.
