EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving showcases three stunning tiger moths: the Atlantarctia tigrina, Arctia caja, and Arctia festiva. The intricate details of their vibrant markings are brilliantly rendered by the Pauquet brothers, who expertly translated the original illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's Natural History of European Butterflies, published in 1864. The Atlantarctia tigrina, or the Tiger moth, is the largest of the three, boasting a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. Its wings are adorned with bold black and orange stripes, providing excellent camouflage against potential predators. The Arctia caja, or Garden Tiger moth, is a medium-sized moth, with a wingspan of around 8 centimeters. Its wings feature striking black and orange bands, with a distinctive 'Y' marking on its forewings. This moth is commonly found in gardens and meadows throughout Europe. The Arctia festiva, or Hebe Tiger moth, is the smallest of the three, with a wingspan of only 6 centimeters. Its wings are a beautiful combination of orange, black, and white, with intricate patterns that resemble the fur of a tiger. These exquisite tiger moths are a testament to the natural beauty and diversity of the insect world, and this engraving serves as a stunning reminder of the intricate details that can be found in nature. The Pauquet brothers' masterful technique and attention to detail bring these moths to life, allowing us to appreciate their unique beauty and wonder.
