EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases an enchanting assembly of six exotic butterflies: the Harmonia tiger wing (Tithorea harmonia), Sunset daggerwing (Marpesia furcula), Andromeda satyr (Cithaerias andromeda), Sapho longwing (Heliconius sapho), and two unidentified species labeled as Harmonia and Heliconius. The Harmonia tiger wing, also known as the Tiger Longwing, is a large and vibrant butterfly native to Central and South America. Its wings are adorned with striking black and orange markings, resembling the tiger's stripes, making it a captivating sight. The Sunset daggerwing, or Marpesia furcula, is another mesmerizing species, characterized by its iridescent wings that display a breathtaking array of colors, from deep red to orange and black. The Andromeda satyr, Cithaerias andromeda, is a medium-sized satyr butterfly, with a wingspan of around 8 cm. Its wings are adorned with intricate patterns of brown, orange, and yellow. The Sapho longwing, Heliconius sapho, is a large and striking butterfly, with wings that can reach up to 10 cm in length. Its wings are adorned with vivid colors, including red, orange, and black, making it a true marvel of the natural world. The two unidentified species, labeled as Harmonia and Heliconius, add to the intrigue of this beautiful collection, showcasing the diversity and allure of the exotic butterflies that captivated the imagination of naturalists and collectors during the 19th century.
