This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Rene Primevere for the supplementary lessons of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's influential work "Natural History, General and Particular," showcases two fascinating Australian marsupials: the Swamp Wallaby (Wallabia bicolor) and the Yellow-bellied Glider (Petaurus australis). The Swamp Wallaby, also known as the Black-tailed Wallaby, is depicted in its typical semi-aquatic habitat, with its distinctive black tail and brown fur. Wallabies are the smaller relatives of kangaroos and are adapted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle, with webbed feet and the ability to swim long distances. They are herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation, and are native to eastern Australia. The Yellow-bellied Glider, on the other hand, is shown in a more arboreal setting, suspended in mid-air with its membranous gliding skin extended. Gliders are agile and nocturnal, and are able to glide through the forest canopy using their long, bushy tails for balance and steering.
