EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print depicts a Sun Bear, Helarctos malayanus, a vulnerable species native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo and southern Thailand. The Sun Bear, also known as the Malay Sun Bear or the Bornean Sun Bear, is the smallest bear species in the world, with adult males weighing between 40 to 65 pounds and females between 25 to 55 pounds. The Sun Bear's distinctive features include a prominent crest on its chest, which is believed to help it blend in with the sunrays filtering through the dense forest canopy. Its coat is mostly black, with distinctive white or cream-colored markings that resemble the sun's rays. The Sun Bear's claws are short and curved, making it an excellent climber and agile tree dweller. This stunning print was drawn and engraved by Thomas Landseer from a specimen in the Tower of London. It was published in Edward Griffiths' The Animal Kingdom by the Baron Cuvier, a seminal work in natural history and zoology published in London in 1824. The meticulous attention to detail in this print is evident in the intricate fur patterns, the lifelike representation of the bear's features, and the lush foliage in the background. Unfortunately, the Sun Bear is currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss, poaching for its paws and gallbladder, and fragmentation of populations. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this remarkable species and its habitat, ensuring that future generations can marvel at its beauty and uniqueness.
