The image, created by the skilled hands of Johann Nussbiegel, was based on an illustration by R. Oakes and published as part of Johann Christian Daniel Schreber's "Animal Illustrations after Nature" or "Schreber's Fantastic Animals," in Erlangen, Germany, during the 18th century. The Sumatran Orangutan, also known as Simia satyrus Linn., is a close relative of the Bornean Orangutan and is the smallest of the three recognized orangutan subspecies. With its distinctive reddish-brown fur, long arms, and expressive face, this magnificent creature is a testament to the rich biodiversity that once thrived in the Indonesian archipelago. Sadly, the Sumatran Orangutan population has been decimated due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching. Deforestation, primarily driven by palm oil plantations and logging, has led to the destruction of vast areas of their natural habitat, forcing these primates to live in increasingly isolated forest fragments. As a result, they are now classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
