EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Streamer-tailed Tyrant, scientifically known as Gubernetes yetapa, also referred to as the Scissortail, Swallow Blackcap, or Streamer-tailed Flycatcher (G. forficatus). The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, specifically the volume dedicated to Flycatchers, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1836. The illustration was created by the skilled naturalist artist, William Swainson. The Streamer-tailed Tyrant is a native bird species found in Central and South America, primarily in the tropical and subtropical regions. The male of the species is easily recognizable by its distinctive long, streamer-like tail feathers, which can extend up to 15 cm (6 inches) beyond the bird's body. The female, on the other hand, has a shorter tail and a more subdued appearance. The Streamer-tailed Tyrant is an agile and active flycatcher, feeding primarily on insects, which it catches in mid-air. It is known for its distinctive call, which resembles the sound of a bell being struck. The species is an important component of the ecosystem and plays a crucial role in controlling insect populations. This beautiful and intricately detailed handcoloured steel engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time. It provides a glimpse into the natural world of the past and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the diverse and fascinating bird species that inhabit our planet.
