EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Spotted Piranha, scientifically known as Serrasalmus marginatus, also referred to as the Red-bordered Saw-bellied Salmon or Piranha pirambebas. The image is taken from Robert Schomburgk's "Fishes of Guiana," which was published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ichthyology in Edinburgh in 1841. The illustration was created by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars. The Spotted Piranha is a freshwater fish native to the waters of South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. These fish are known for their sharp, triangular teeth, which are well-suited for their omnivorous diet. Contrary to popular belief, piranhas do not form swarms that indiscriminately attack and devour large numbers of people or livestock. Instead, they typically feed on smaller fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. The Spotted Piranha's body is elongated and slender, with a silver-gray back and a white belly. The fish is covered in small, dark spots, which give it its common name. The most distinctive feature of the Spotted Piranha is the saw-like edge of its lower jaw, which is used to saw through the scales and bones of its prey. This intricately detailed engraving captures the beauty and unique features of the Spotted Piranha, providing a glimpse into the diverse and fascinating world of tropical freshwater fish.
