Special Sphere Supplement Unknown Warrior
EDITORS COMMENTS
The Unknown Warrior: A Tribute to the Fallen Heroes of World War I This powerful and poignant image is taken from Page 6 of the "Sphere Unknown Warrior Special Supplement," published by the Illustrated London News Ltd in 1920. The supplement was a tribute to the Unknown Warrior, an unidentified British soldier whose body was brought back from France and interred in Westminster Abbey on Armistice Day, November 11, 1920. The photograph shows a solemn procession carrying the Unknown Warrior's coffin through the streets of London. The soldier's comrades, dressed in their military uniforms, march in silence, their faces etched with sorrow and respect. The crowd that lines the streets watches in quiet reverence as the coffin passes by. The Unknown Warrior was chosen from among the thousands of unidentified soldiers who had died in the war. His body was brought back to England and given a state funeral, attended by King George V and Queen Mary, as well as thousands of mourners. The idea behind the Unknown Warrior was to represent all the soldiers who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the war, and to ensure that their memory would be honored and remembered. The Sphere Unknown Warrior Special Supplement was published to mark the occasion of the Unknown Warrior's funeral and to pay tribute to the sacrifices of all those who had served and died in the war. The supplement contained articles, poems, and illustrations that celebrated the bravery and heroism of the British soldiers and highlighted the importance of peace and remembrance. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of World War I and the enduring impact of their service and sacrifice on the British people. It is a poignant testament to the enduring power of memory and the importance of honoring those who gave their lives for their country.
