EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts a majestic Southern Elephant Seal, Mirounga leonina, in its prime. The male, also known as a bull, is shown in all its impressive size and strength. With a length of up to 6 meters and weighing up to 4 tonnes, this seal is the largest of all living seal species. The intricate details of the engraving capture the distinctive features of the Southern Elephant Seal. The large, curved tusks, or ivory teeth, are evident, as is the long, muscular neck and the massive, rounded body. The thick layer of blubber, which helps the seal survive in the cold Antarctic waters, is also clearly depicted. This engraving is a beautiful representation of the Southern Elephant Seal, created by W.H. Lizars after an illustration by James Stewart. It was published as part of Robert Hamilton's "Amphibious Carnivora," which was included in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Mammalia. The work was published in Edinburgh in 1839 and showcases the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that was a hallmark of the Naturalist's Library series. The Southern Elephant Seal is a true masterpiece of nature, and this engraving is a testament to the beauty and power of this magnificent creature. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting these animals and their habitats, ensuring that future generations can marvel at their majesty and wonder.
