EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Snowberry, Symphoria racemosa, also known as the American or Common Snowberry, Symphoricarpos racemosa, Sinforicarpo di fiori racemosi, or Mahogany Snowberry. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. In this illustration, the Snowberry is depicted with small, green leaves and clusters of white, berry-like flowers. The plant is native to North America, Central America, and the West Indies, and its edible, red or purple berries have been used for food and medicinal purposes by various indigenous cultures. The Snowberry is a critical component of many ecosystems, providing food and shelter for a variety of wildlife. However, the species is now critically endangered due to habitat loss, over-harvesting of its berries, and other threats. This beautiful and historic illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the role that botanical art plays in documenting and celebrating the diversity of plant life.
