This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, created by the Pauquet brothers and based on an original illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's "Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe" (Natural History of European Butterflies) published in 1864, showcases two stunning moth species: the Small Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia) and the Tau Emperor (Aglia tau). The intricate detail of the engraving brings out the unique features of each moth, making it a true work of art. The Small Emperor Moth is depicted in its full regalia, with the male (left) displaying its vibrant orange and black wings, adorned with intricate patterns and a distinctive white band across the forewings.
