EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Sciences) in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two exquisite marine crustaceans: the Slipper Lobster (Thenus orientalis, also known as Scyllarus orientalis or Ibacus orientalis) and the Butterfly Fan Lobster (Ibacus peronii, also known as Scyllarus peronii or Ibacus di Peron). The Slipper Lobster, with its distinctive elongated, flattened body and large, fan-like claws, is commonly found burrowed in the muddy seafloor. The Butterfly Fan Lobster, named for its fan-like appendages, is also known as the Burrowing Ghost Shrimp or the Mud Shrimp and is often mistaken for a plant or a piece of seaweed due to its cryptic coloration. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The intricate detail and lifelike accuracy of the engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrators and engravers of the time. The Slipper Lobster and Butterfly Fan Lobster are both edible and have been an important food source for coastal communities for centuries. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of these fascinating marine creatures but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of botany and natural science during the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving transport us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the wonder and complexity of the natural world as it was observed and documented over two centuries ago.
