EDITORS COMMENTS
Sitka, a captivating scene from the Russian possession on the North-West coast of America, as it appeared in the mid-1850s. The quaint settlement, nestled amidst the lush greenery and towering trees, served as a vital outpost for the Russian-American Company's trading operations. Established in 1799, Sitka was the largest and southernmost Russian settlement in Alaska, and a testament to the rich cultural exchange between Russia and the indigenous Tlingit people. The tranquil harbor, dotted with Russian Orthodox churches and colorful wooden buildings, reflects the unique blend of Russian and Alaskan influences. The majestic mountains in the background add to the breathtaking beauty of this remote and enchanting place. By 1855, Sitka had become a melting pot of diverse cultures, with Russians, Tlingits, and other indigenous groups living together in relative harmony. However, this peaceful coexistence was soon to be disrupted. In that year, the United States, under the command of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, arrived to claim Alaska for the American flag. The transfer of power from Russia to the United States, known as the Treaty of Sitka, was formalized on October 18, 1867. This evocative image offers a glimpse into a bygone era, when the Russian presence in Alaska was a significant chapter in the history of the North-West coast of America. The serene beauty of Sitka, with its rich cultural tapestry and natural wonders, continues to captivate visitors from around the world.
