EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an original illustration by Edouard Travies, showcases two intriguing bird species: the Siberian rubythroat (Luscinia calliope) and the black-eared wheatear morph (Oenanthe hispanica stapazina). The Siberian rubythroat, also known as the Siberian blue-throat or the Siberian luscinia, is a small, migratory songbird native to Eastern Europe and Asia. The male is characterized by its striking ruby-red throat, which contrasts beautifully with its olive-green back and wings. The female, on the other hand, has a plain, grayish-brown throat. The black-eared wheatear morph, also known as the Black-eared Wheatear or the Desert Wheatear, is a resident of Africa, Europe, and Asia. This bird is known for its distinctive black ear patches, which are not visible in this illustration. The morph depicted here is the stapazina, which has a reddish-brown throat and a pale belly. The Siberian rubythroat and the black-eared wheatear morph belong to different genera, with the Siberian rubythroat being part of the Luscinia genus and the black-eared wheatear morph belonging to the Oenanthe genus. Both birds are part of the Muscicapidae family, which includes a diverse range of Old World flycatchers, chats, and thrushes. This stunning illustration is taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors of the engraving make it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art.
