EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, created by the Pauquet brothers and based on an illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's "Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe" (Natural History of European Butterflies) published in 1864, showcases six different species of European butterflies: the Scotch Argus (Erebia aethiops), Large Ringlet (Erebia euryale), Autumn Ringlet (Erebia neoridas), Arran Brown (Erebia ligea), Scotch Argus (ventral view), and Arran Brown (ventral view). The intricate details of their delicate wings are beautifully captured in this engraving, highlighting the unique patterns and colors of each species. The Scotch Argus, with its distinctive orange and black wings, is depicted in both the dorsal and ventral views. The Large Ringlet, characterized by its large, orange-brown wings with black borders and white spots, is shown in the dorsal view. The Autumn Ringlet, which resembles the Large Ringlet but has more orange hues, is depicted in the ventral view. The Arran Brown, with its brown wings adorned with small white spots, is shown in both the dorsal and ventral views. This engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the Pauquet brothers and Alexis Nicolas Noel, as well as Hippolyte Lucas's dedication to documenting the natural world. The result is a stunning work of art that captures the beauty and diversity of European butterflies.
