EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur" (The Butterflies and Moths Represented according to Nature), was created by Johann Carl Bock based on the original works of Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers in 1786. The intricately detailed image showcases a selection of various moths, including the Saxon moth (Hyppa rectilinea, number 1), also known as the Shears moth, with its distinctive wings adorned with a zigzag pattern. The Marsh dagger moth (Acronicta strigosa, number 4) is depicted with its wings spread wide, revealing the striking orange and black markings. Number 2, 3, and 6 represent the Shears moths (Hada plebeja), characterized by their brown and white wings. The Brown-spot pinion moth (Agrochola litura, number 5) is shown with its wings closed, revealing the intricate patterns on its body. Number 7 is the Opigena polygona, with its unique green and silver-spangled wings. The White-line dart moth (Euxoa nigrofusca, number 6) is identified by its white lines on dark wings, while the Cucullia argentea (number 11) is known for its silver-gray wings with dark markings. The Artemisiae glareosa moth (number 13) is depicted with its wings closed, revealing its intricate body patterns. This work of art not only showcases the beauty of these moths but also highlights the intricate metamorphosis from caterpillar to pupa to adult. The Lepidoptera, or order of insects that includes both butterflies and moths, has long been a subject of fascination for naturalists and collectors alike. This engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the 18th century.
