EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving showcases a captivating collection of European butterflies, featuring the Satyrus arachne, Satyrus evias, and the spring ringlet. The Satyrus arachne, also known as the Arachne Ringlet, is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of around 5 centimeters. Its wings are adorned with intricate patterns of brown, orange, and black, with a distinctive white band near the edge. The Satyrus evias, or the Small Ringlet, is a smaller species with a wingspan of only 3.5 centimeters. Its wings display a similar color palette, but with a more subtle pattern. The spring ringlet is a collective name for two closely related species, the Satyrus arachne and Satyrus evias, which can be distinguished by minor differences in their wing patterns. They are named for their early emergence in the spring, making them among the first butterflies to be seen in many European regions. Surrounding these three species are other enchanting butterflies, including the Erebia epistgyne, a vulnerable species with a wingspan of up to 7 centimeters. Its wings are characterized by their striking orange and black patterns, with a distinctive white band near the edge. The marbled ringlet, Erebia montana goante, is another beautiful species, with its wings displaying a marbled pattern of brown and orange. This stunning artwork was created by the Pauquet brothers, renowned for their meticulous attention to detail, based on an illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel. It was published as part of Hippolyte Lucas's Natural History of European Butterflies, Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe, in 1864. The intricate hand-coloring adds an extra layer of beauty to the already captivating designs, making this a truly remarkable piece of natural history art.
