EDITORS COMMENTS
The South Gates of Dukes Place, an intriguing piece of historical architecture, stand in ruins near Aldgate in England. These gates were built by Sir Thomas Audley, a prominent figure during the reign of King Henry VIII, around 1532. The gates served as the entrance to the grand manor house of Dukes Place, which was a favorite residence of the monarch himself. The South Gates were once a magnificent sight to behold, adorned with intricate carvings and ornate decorations. However, they have since succumbed to the passage of time, leaving only their bronze-cast busts of King James I and other historical figures as reminders of their former glory. This image is a copperplate engraving by John Thomas Smith, based on original drawings by members of the Society of Antiquaries. The Society of Antiquaries is a prestigious organization dedicated to the study and preservation of history and archaeology in London and its environs. The engraving, published in 1793 by J. Sewell, R. Folder, and J. Simco, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the historical significance of the South Gates of Dukes Place. The gates were once the entrance to a banquetting room, a place where royalty and nobility would gather for feasts and celebrations. The room, located in the Whitehall Palace, was a symbol of power and opulence during the Tudor era. Today, the ruins of the South Gates serve as a reminder of the rich history and architectural heritage of England.
