EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an intriguing assembly of five different species of European freshwater fish: the Rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), Nase (Chondrostoma nasus), Vimba Bream (Vimba vimba), and Dace (Leuciscus leuciscus). The meticulously detailed illustration highlights the unique characteristics of each fish, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of Europe's freshwater ecosystems during the late 18th century. The Rudd, depicted in the center, is a popular coarse fish with a distinctive red eye and olive-green back. The Nase, or European Stone Loach, can be identified by its elongated snout and brownish-grey coloration. The Vimba Bream, or European White Bream, is shown on the left with its white, speckled body and distinctive black lateral line. Lastly, the Dace, or European Stone Dace, is illustrated on the right with its slender body and silver-grey coloration, adorned with black spots. This charming illustration not only serves as an educational tool for children, but also as a testament to the naturalistic artistry of the time. The intricate engraving process, combined with the delicate hand-coloring, results in a visually stunning representation of these fascinating fish species. This image offers a glimpse into the past, providing us with a unique perspective on the natural world as it was understood during the late 18th century.
