EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a proud Rouen duck cock and hen, bred by J. K. Fowler and awarded the cup at the prestigious Aylesbury show in 1870. The image is taken from Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry," published by Cassell in London in 1890. The meticulously detailed illustration was created by J.W. Ludlow and expertly reproduced by Vincent Brooks Day & Son. During the Victorian era, the breeding and exhibiting of exotic poultry was a popular hobby among the affluent classes. Rouen ducks, with their distinctive plumage and large, curved bills, were highly sought after for their ornamental value as well as for their meat and eggs. The Rouen breed originated in France, and was named after the city of Rouen. This print captures the essence of the Rouen duck craze that swept through England during the late 19th century. The drake, with his vibrant orange-chestnut plumage and glossy green head, stands proudly next to the hen, whose rich, dark brown feathers are contrasted by her bright orange bill and feet. The drake's curved, sword-like bill is a striking feature of the breed, and was often the subject of much fascination and admiration. The Rouen duck was also used for game, and the sport of cockfighting, although illegal, was still prevalent during this time. However, the popularity of breeding and exhibiting Rouen ducks was not driven by their use as game birds, but rather by their exotic and ornamental value. The fever for collecting rare and unusual poultry breeds reached such heights that some collectors would pay exorbitant sums of money for the rarest and most beautiful specimens. This beautiful print is a testament to the fascination with Rouen ducks during the Victorian era, and serves as a reminder of the rich history and diversity of poultry breeding.
