EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two intriguing ground squirrel species: the Richardson's ground squirrel (Urocitellus richardsonii) and the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus). The Richardson's ground squirrel, named after the famous explorer Sir John Richardson, is a medium-sized rodent endemic to North America. They are characterized by their reddish-brown fur, short bushy tail, and distinctive white stripe running down the length of their back. These agile creatures are burrowing animals, spending most of their time in underground tunnels, which they dig with their powerful front paws. They are social animals, living in colonies, and are known for their ability to hibernate during the winter months. The thirteen-lined ground squirrel, on the other hand, is a striped ground squirrel species, with thirteen alternating light and dark stripes running down its sides. They are native to the central and eastern United States and southern Canada. These squirrels are named for their distinctive stripes, which help them blend in with their surroundings and provide excellent camouflage. They are diurnal animals, active during the day, and are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of vegetation, seeds, nuts, and insects. This beautiful engraving, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these two ground squirrel species. It is a testament to the skill and artistry of the engraver and the dedication of the naturalists of the time to document and preserve the wonders of the natural world.
