EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts Rene Pot, Regnier Pot, Seigneur de la Prugne, a 15th century nobleman from the Low Countries. The image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century, published in Paris in 1890. The armorial is based on an illustrated manuscript from the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal, numbered 4790. Rene Pot is shown in full armor, mounted on a horse and holding a lance in his right hand. The shield on his left arm bears the Pot family coat of arms, which consists of a golden fleece on a blue background. This symbol is a reference to Rene's membership in the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece, an exclusive chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The elaborate decoration on Rene's armor reflects the high status and wealth of the noble class during the late Middle Ages. The intricate patterns and rich colors are brought to life through the chromolithographic printing process, which was a popular method for producing detailed and vibrant images during the 19th century. The armorial also includes the emblems of various European noble families, making it an important historical record of the heraldry of the time. The image of Rene Pot, Regnier Pot, Seigneur de la Prugne, is a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the European aristocracy in the 15th century.
