EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of arrival for weary and displaced civilians as they reach the small French town of Champillon on September 26, 1914. Amidst the chaos and upheaval of the First World War, the people in this image represent just a fraction of the estimated one million refugees who were forced to flee their homes during the early stages of the conflict. The scene depicts a diverse group of men, women, and children, some carrying belongings on bicycles or in carts, while others walk wearily behind. The refugees in this photograph had been driven from their homes in and around Reims, a major city in northeastern France, as the German army advanced during the early months of the war. The town of Champillon, located just a few miles to the southeast of Reims, became a temporary haven for these displaced civilians. The image underscores the human cost of war, as families and communities were torn apart and forced to seek refuge in unfamiliar places. The photograph is part of The John Barrett Collection, held by Mary Evans Picture Library. Barrett, a British journalist and photographer, documented the impact of the war on civilians in France and Belgium during the early years of the conflict. His work provides a poignant reminder of the experiences of ordinary people during this tumultuous period in history.
