EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Sophie Cornu after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three fascinating species of fish from the Red Sea: the Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus), Striped Red Mullet (Mullus surmuletus), and Red Sea Goatfish (Parupeneus forsskali). The Red Mullet, also known as the Red Mullet or Rouget, is a popular food fish with a distinctive red coloration and elongated body. The Striped Red Mullet, also known as the Striped Red Mullet or Surmulet, is a similar species with distinctive stripes along its sides. The Red Sea Goatfish, or Forsskali's Goatfish, is a unique and colorful fish with a distinctive goat-like face and a body covered in small scales. This engraving is taken from the Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, a seminal work by Bernard Germain de Lacépède, published in Paris in 1825. The meticulous attention to detail in this engraving highlights the beauty and diversity of these fish species, which continue to thrive in the Red Sea and other tropical waters around the world. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of vibrancy and depth to the image, making it a true work of art as well as a valuable scientific record.
