EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving is a captivating representation of various fish species from the depths of the ocean, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804. The engraving showcases an intriguing collection of marine life, including the Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus, number 58), with its vibrant red color and elongated body. Adorning the second spot is the Spotted Goatfish (Pseudupeneus maculatus, number 59), easily identified by its distinctive black spots and long, pointed snout. Moving on, we come across the Tub Gurnard (Chelidonichthys lucerna, number 60), a flatfish with a unique, tubular snout, and the Flying Gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans, number 61), so named for its ability to 'fly' through the water by launching itself out of the water using its pectoral fins. The Armed Gurnard (Peristedion cataphractum, number 62), is depicted in the bottom right corner, with its distinctive armor-like scales and sharp spines. Completing the lineup are the Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus) and three different species of gurnards: the Tub Gurnard (Chelidonichthys lucerna), the Flying Gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans), and the Armed Gurnard (Peristedion cataphractum). Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was known as the German Buffon for his significant contributions to the field of natural history. This engraving is a testament to his dedication and the impressive advancements in scientific illustration during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The intricate details and vivid colors bring these fascinating creatures to life, offering a glimpse into the rich and diverse world of marine life.
