EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jacob Ludwig Admiral in 1774, depicts the various stages of the Red Admiral butterfly, Vanessa atalanta. The image includes the caterpillar and pupa, which are meticulously rendered with great attention to detail. The Red Admiral butterfly is a common species found throughout Europe, North Africa, and Asia. The adult butterfly is characterized by its vibrant orange and black wings, while the caterpillar is strikingly marked with a series of yellow, black, and red bands. This engraving is taken from the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects), published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam. For this edition, the work was expanded to include an additional eight plates, bringing the total number to thirty-three. The work was a significant contribution to the fields of entomology and botany during the 18th century in Holland. The intricate details of this engraving are a testament to the advanced techniques of the time, which allowed for the precise rendering of natural forms. The use of hand-coloring further enhances the beauty and realism of the image. The presence of a flower in the background adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the print, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art or scientific illustrations.
