EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a majestic Puma, also known as a Cougar or Mountain Lion, in its natural habitat within the Gardens of the Zoological Society. The Puma, scientifically named Puma concolor, is a large cat species native to the Americas, with a wide range stretching from Canada to South America. This powerful predator is a member of the Felidae family, and is characterized by its distinctive coat, which features yellowish to brownish fur with black spots and stripes. The male and female Pumas in this image are shown in their regal poses, showcasing their muscular physiques and striking features. The male, with its prominent mane and large paws, exudes strength and power, while the female, with her sleek body and piercing gaze, embodies grace and agility. This engraving is taken from William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's History of the Earth and Animated Nature, published by Thomas Kelly in London in 1829. Buffon was a renowned French naturalist and encyclopedist, and his work was a seminal influence on the development of modern biology. Smellie's translation brought Buffon's groundbreaking ideas to a wider English-speaking audience, making it an invaluable resource for naturalists and scholars of the time. The Puma, once widespread across North and South America, is now considered an endangered species in some areas due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as hunting and poaching. Today, conservation efforts are underway to protect this magnificent creature and preserve its populations in the wild.
