EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, offers a fascinating glimpse into the process of cod fishing and preservation on board an 18th century factory ship. The Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, is depicted in various stages of processing: men and women are shown gutting and salting the fish on the deck, while others drop the fish into the hold and load them into barrels. The cod, a staple food source in Europe, was caught in large quantities using longlines and trawls, and was then preserved through salting to ensure its longevity for consumption during the off-season. The intricate details of the engraving, from the individual scales on the fish to the ropes and tools used in the processing, provide a window into the daily life of a factory ship and the important role it played in the economy and sustenance of communities during this time period. Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was known as the German Buffon for his extensive work in the field of ichthyology and marine biology.
