EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Primus blackberry, a hybrid variety of Rubus ursinus (thimbleberry) and Rubus crataegifolius (wild pink root blackberry), created around the late 19th century. The intricately detailed illustration was produced by botanical artist William H. Prestele and published in the "Report of the Pomologist" by the US Department of Agriculture in 1892. Hoen, a renowned chromolithography firm, was responsible for the print's vibrant and lifelike production. The Primus blackberry was a significant horticultural achievement during this period, as it combined the desirable traits of both parent species. Thimbleberries, represented by Rubus ursinus, are native to North America and produce small, tart berries. Wild pink root blackberries, represented by Rubus crataegifolius, are also native to North America and have larger, sweeter berries. The Primus blackberry hybrid aimed to offer the best of both worlds: a larger, sweeter berry with the hardiness and disease resistance of the thimbleberry. This print not only showcases the beauty of the Primus blackberry but also highlights the remarkable progress in horticulture and botanical illustration during the late 1800s. It serves as a testament to the dedication of scientists, artists, and farmers who worked tirelessly to improve agricultural practices and expand the world's culinary offerings.
