EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph, created by Burggraaf for Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon published in Brussels in 1837, showcases two captivating varieties of fancy pigeon breeds: the Pouter Pigeon (Columba livia) and the Jacobin Pigeon (Columba cucullata). The Pouter Pigeon, also known as the English or Monastery Pouter, is depicted in the foreground with its distinctive large, fleshy wattles that give it an almost comical appearance. These wattles are artificially developed through selective breeding, and the bird is often displayed with its wattles inflated, creating an exaggerated and impressive appearance. The Pouter Pigeon's body is adorned with intricate feathered patterns, adding to its allure. In the background, the Jacobin Pigeon, also known as the Jacobin or Capuchin Pigeon, can be seen. This breed is characterized by its distinctive cap or hood, which is formed by the feathers on its head. The Jacobin Pigeon's body is covered in iridescent green and purple feathers, creating a stunning visual contrast against the muted tones of the Pouter Pigeon. Fancy pigeon breeding, as depicted in this lithograph, was a popular pastime among the European aristocracy during the 18th and 19th centuries. These birds were often kept in elaborate dovecotes and shown off at exhibitions, with breeders competing to create the most visually striking and unusual varieties. The intricate feather patterns and artificial enhancements seen in these birds were achieved through selective breeding and careful feeding regimens. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the breeders and artists of the time, who sought to create unique and captivating varieties of pigeons. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these birds to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and intrigue over 180 years after they were first created.
