This powerful and evocative poster, dating from January 1917, was produced in response to the Military Service Acts of 1916 during World War I. The acts, which came into effect on the 2nd of March 1916, introduced conscription for the first time in the United Kingdom, making it compulsory for single men between the ages of 19 and 41 to enlist in the army, navy, or the Royal Flying Corps. The poster, which features a determined and resolute man in military uniform, with the caption "Your Country Needs You," was designed to encourage men to answer the call to service, and to join the Army Reserve. The poster's striking visual impact, combined with its clear and concise message, helped to galvanize public support for the war effort and to ensure that the British armed forces remained strong and well-manned throughout the conflict.
