This portrait depicts Flavius Marcianus Augustus, better known as Emperor Marcian, the Eastern Roman Emperor from 450 to 457 AD. Marcian was a key figure during the Byzantine Empire's transition from the classical Roman period to the Middle Ages. Marcian's regal presence is captured in this meticulously crafted copperplate engraving, which is an excerpt from Abraham Bogaert's seminal work, "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697.
