EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Portrait of Roman Emperor Macrinus (Marcus Opellius Severus Macrinus Augustus) This portrait depicts Marcus Opellius Severus Macrinus, who ruled the Roman Empire as emperor from 217 to 218 AD. Macrinus, also known as Diadumenian or Antoninus Diadumenianus, was born into a wealthy equestrian family and rose to power through his military prowess and political acumen. The portrait, a copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697, showcases the emperor in a formal attire adorned with the imperial diadem and a cloak draped over his left shoulder. Macrinus' youthful appearance, with his boyish features and short, curly hair, contrasts with the usual depictions of Roman emperors as mature, bearded men. Macrinus' reign was marked by political instability and military conflicts. He came to power after the assassination of Caracalla and was eventually overthrown and killed by the soldier Macrinus' own son-in-law, Elagabalus. Despite the short duration of his rule, Macrinus' portrait remains an intriguing testament to the diverse and complex nature of the Roman imperial court. The 17th-century engraving, produced during the height of the Baroque period, captures the classical elegance and grandeur of Roman imperial art. The intricate details of Macrinus' clothing, the delicate rendering of his facial features, and the overall sense of regal authority conveyed by the image make it an invaluable historical and artistic treasure. In summary, this portrait of Roman Emperor Macrinus, created as a copperplate engraving by Abraham Bogaerts in the late 17th century, offers a unique glimpse into the life and reign of a lesser-known emperor, whose youthful appearance and political intrigue continue to fascinate scholars and enthusiasts of ancient history.
